Often, we have a tendency to judge anything from the way we see or hear things. We are unable to see the deeper level of the reality. So, irrespective of the appearance of the effect, you have to pause for a moment and ponder upon what could be the cause of this.
The good karma that you have been generating in the past, comes back to you as many material manifestations. All these have to be deployed at least substantially, for the benefit of the mankind.
Self-interest is good to the extent that you have to earn a living to care for yourself and your family. You, as a warrior, as a Kshatriya, your Dharma is to protect the interest of your people first and then you take care of yourself.
In the ancient times, the warriors were actually interested in the well being of the people. Many such great Kings and Queens were exemplary as the focus was on protecting Dharma and protecting the integrity of the nation.
