Let’s continue with our study from the Secrets of Karma. We shall read on Law of Cycles. There is a profound quotation.

Spiritual evolution is governed by the law of cycles. It is cyclical but on an upward trend.

Very profound statement to really understand and contemplate a lot. It is cyclical but on an upward trend, we are talking about spiritual evolution. So, of course when we talk about cycles, it has got so many levels, not just one level of understanding of the cycle. There are cycles in the season, there are cycles within the human body, there are cycles that happen in the celestial sphere.

Everything keeps on changing but while all the changes are happening in a cyclical way, there is an evolution also connected with this process. Sometimes, people misinterpret the cycle. According to certain schools, events keep on repeating eons upon eons of time.

That means maybe several million years ago, you and I were having a chat like this, reading the book on karma and exactly now we are repeating the same activity. That is one interpretation of some schools. So, they literally think that cyclical means everything needs to repeat itself exactly the same way.

Whereas the truth is that because it is an evolving universe, together with the cycle, there is all the time a shift in the consciousness of mankind, consciousness of the sentient beings. There is a constant upgradation in all levels.

That means as we start evolving, perhaps we might be going through a cyclical pattern of challenges but these challenges as you evolve get more and more refined, it is not for example the gross challenges that the majority of the humanity is facing.

Challenges on the spiritual path are very subtle. Most importantly for example, it deals with pride. It’s a mighty challenge to overcome pride. It’s a mighty challenge to overcome body consciousness. While the rest of the humanity is not even aware of body consciousness and they are simply living like any other creatures on the planet, you and I, we are now focusing on these minute aspects of our life.

It is not an easy job. It is easier to build anything, any structure but to build your spiritual structure, it demands extraordinary effort.

Anybody can build anything with experience, with training. When we come to spiritual path, it is not so because the mightier you get, the mightier are the opposing forces. It is really not an easy thing to sustain your spiritual practices on the path.

So, though you are going through cyclical aspects of challenges, of anything else but these cyclic patterns in our life, they are actually on an evolving trend. If you notice your own life, maybe at some point in time you were struggling with gross activities, with gross challenges.

Today, the challenges are very different. One of the challenges that perhaps you might be facing is challenges in your spiritual family, how to cope up with the multitude of people and still maintaining your inner equilibrium. That is a challenge.

I am just taking an example. In this way, as we keep evolving, the challenges tend to be more refined. So, it is a cyclical pattern of challenges but it is on an evolving trend. Same thing happens at a macro level concerning many races. So many races have come and gone.

Humanity has seen the highest of the highest aspects of existence and the lowest of the lowest and these patterns keep on going in a cyclical pattern. So, the pandemic that the humanity is facing now again talks about the cycle, touching almost the bottom.

So, this has happened in the past several times, but now if you look into the way we have been dealing with the situation, it is more of a spiritual experience rather than literally a gross experience.  

So, it is a cyclic pattern but the position where you are is very different from what it was, say, hundreds years back or two hundred years back when there were different forms of pandemic that were actually ravaging the whole planet.

As the human consciousness is evolving, the cyclical patterns are also evolving. It is now on the subtle plane. So, that is why you are witnessing today, we are basically on a war, war on subtler level.

During the time of Piscean, the masters have said, “The one who rules the sea will rule the world because Piscean is water sign.” After the Piscean era is gone, now we are in the Aquarian era. Aquarian or Aquarius is connected with air element.

So, now the rules are, the one who rules the air will rule the world. That’s exactly what you are actually facing today, communications! The wars are no longer on the grosser level but on a subtler level but much mightier than the gross level of wars.

That is again another cyclical pattern on an evolving trend. I hope you got this message clearly. Alright, let us continue with our study.

You will notice that the pairs of opposites are actually a part of the cycle, an evolutionary cycle. If all the time you experience only comfort and joy, it is impossible for evolution to happen.

It is only going through the pairs of opposites, meaning through the cycles, that the soul evolves. That means challenges of life are a part of our life. It is an inevitable process and it is a very positive process.

If your actions are constantly righteous, regardless of what you need to experience to balance your karma and learn your karmic lessons, you will progressively move up the cycle and accomplish great progress. That is why we have been reminded to accept everything cheerfully.

You also experience the cyclic pattern of a revolving wheel where what is down coming up and what is up going down. What you experience during any cycle depends upon the karma you need to work on and the lessons you need to learn from those karmic conditions.

Generally, you harvest the sweet fruits of good karma during the cycle of ascent and reap more of the bitter fruits of your negative karma during the cycle of descent.

The word “more of the bitter fruits” it is not that all the time you are going to have pain and suffering. There are times when you do have little happiness, for sure.

Therefore, even within a day you will notice that we go through certain cyclic patterns. Sometimes the mood is good, sometimes it is not so good, sometimes you are very happy, sometimes you are not, sometimes the body is supporting you wonderfully, sometimes it is not.

Sometimes people are giving us challenges, sometimes the very same people are giving us so much love and care. Cycle is a part of existence, and once you understand this properly, you will learn to set the right expectations.

This process is automatic and works like the standing order you give to your bank for payment of bills.

The Game of Cycles

Also known as paramapadam or the Supreme Feet(of the Lord), the game of Snakes and Ladders is a perfect depiction of the laws of karma and the cycles.

It is said that the snakes make you reap your bad karma and bring you down while your good karma helps you to go up the ladder. The dice, symbolic of destiny, determines where you move along in the game of life.
